Multichannel seismic (MCS) reflection survey system

We carry out such tasks as enhancing, managing, performing observation with, and processing data for the multichannel seismic (MCS) and single-channel seismic (SCS) reflection survey systems owned by JAMSTEC. Other tasks include designing and improving towing methods for different types of vessels.

MCS/SCS: What we do MCS/SCS: What we do

The purpose of a seismic reflection survey is to visualize the structure of the sub-bottom geologic strata. This type of exploration is generally useful for oil exploration, and the data Nippon Marine Enterprises obtains becomes important data used in the scientific research carried out by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).
The MCS method, which uses large-capacity air guns (usually eight LL guns for simultaneous oscillation) and a multichannel streamer cable, makes it possible to visualize the behavior of areas below the seabed to show subduction activity occurring below the Japanese archipelago (for example, the Pacific Ocean and the Philippine Sea plates). The resulting data is used to understand the mechanisms that cause huge earthquakes in the seas around Japan. In contrast to the MCS method, the SCS method generally uses a single GI gun and a single-channel streamer cable, and makes it possible to visualize in detail the behavior of sediments in the shallow strata. Accordingly, this method is typically used for detailed researches of the geologic strata in Sagami Bay.
